How can the cultural and artistic scene be restored in a country that has been isolated for a decade? How can the question of identity be addressed in a country that has ceased to exist? How to act locally and communicate directly in a time of the rise of internet and globalisation? What could be a common ground for hundreds of young artists regardless of their cultural background, upbringing and method of expression? How can art be taught besides and beyond the academy?
Initiating Real Presence was an attempt to reply to these and similar questions. It started in Belgrade, Serbia in 2001 as an international encounter of young artists and art students, and in the ten following years it became a wide platform that totaled 1790 “presences”. More than a curatorial project, organising Real Presence was a form of commitment and engagement which would enable young artists from Serbia and beyond to get to know each other, learn from each other, collaborate and establish a network. The book Real Presence on one hand represents a collection of statements by a number of its former participants who are active and affirmed protagonists within the contemporary art scene today, and on the other, a collection of reflections on different teaching approaches and methods by artists and curators who are engaged in education.
